Summer Events: XXIX Olympiad – Beijing 2008

XXIX Olympiad
Beijing, China
August 8 – 24, 2008

I have to admit, the Beijing olympic games have been thrown with a lot of controversies and challenges throughout its struggles to finally win the biddings and host the olympics which will open on August 8.

If there is anything I’m hoping for… its that this olympics may be successful with everyone showing respect to each other and for the host city to be as open as possible to what is happening around the event.

I definitely have started to lose interest to the olympics lately… maybe because my work is overlapping with the games as it happened with the 2002 winter olympics in Salt Lake City, 2004 (summer) in Athens, Greece and 2006 (winter) in Torino, Italy. It’s going to be even harder with regards to the Beijing olympics because the time zones between EST and China Time are total opposites and rather than live games, I might see reruns from Canadian TV. But I’ll manage somehow.

The events I would be looking forward to would be the football matches – although olympic soccer isn’t really as high profile as the World Cup where pros play the games – there is a possibility to find future stars in that tournament so it’s no surprise that I am interested with it.

The other event would be baseball and softball. Definitely Japan, Cuba and Canada are among the best in baseball. Japan and the US are the best teams for softball.

Track and Field, Gymnastics and Swimming are amongst the mostly shown olympic events on TV as far as I have seen here in Toronto.

Basketball would be interesting as the US Dream Team lays low aiming for a good sporting event rather than solely imposing themselves in the tournament as gold medal favourites.

More of the sports will be up in the games – but right now, the countdown to the olympics is still running.
